Kaikoura Winery

The Kaikoura Wine Company opened October 29 1999 for tours and tastings and was founded by a direct descendant of Luke and Anne Abraham, the first Europeans to settle on the Kaikoura flat. The winery is situated high on the limestone bluff just south of Kaikoura Township, offering magnificent views of snow-capped mountain ranges and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean as well as providing an informative tour of the vineyard, winery and underground cellar.

Open daily

The Cellar door is open from 10.00am until 5.30pm with tours on the hour. The tour starts in the vineyard, moves through the winery and then takes you into the underground cellar, with the tasting finishing back in the cellar door area overlooking the bay. Tour and tasting will take approximately 45 mins, but can be tailor made for individual groups. Bookings must be made if there are 12 or more in the group. Maximum tour group size at one time is 50. Picnics welcomed. Provision has been made for ample coach/car parking and restroom requirements.

Five hectares of vineyard is planted immediately surrounding the winery and sales area with the main varieties being Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. Trial blocks of Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling are also being established.

With a stable temperature of around 12 o C the wine cellar provides an excellent environment for barrel aging the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as well as offering guests a unique setting for tasting and experiencing the flavours of the home label. The natural limestone caves of Kaikoura provided the initial concept for the underground cellar. The sales area is perched near the edge of the bluff overlooking South Bay where dolphins can often be seen frolicking in the blue green Pacific.

The Kaikoura Wine Company is the first vineyard in the world to achieve its Green Globe 21 Benchmarking – Achieved August 2002
